As an important part of our historical and cultural heritage, the burial culture has a long history with rich content. Besides the Mausoleum, the burials by SMEs after archaeological excavation show clear shape structure, explicit construction methods, and unearthed a large number of funerary goods. Under the burial concept of "treating dead as alive ", these tombs reveal a more complete picture of material and spiritual world in the mass society in the ancient times. It is the window to explore the social culture of that time, with a very rich historical and cultural value. In modern times, the activation of the use of cultural heritage is increasingly popular, cultural heritage protection is no longer limited, instead, many more places tend to make the use of the legacy, and coordinate with the development of both society and residents, which gives new social and economic value of cultural heritage. However, due to their academic values, small and medium sized tombs have gained relatively low attention. Before the construction of the expansion of the city, there is a large number of passive archaeological excavations, and after excavation, these tombs are inevitably face the embarrassing ending-sacrifice for urban developmentThis paper, based on the situations of small and medium tombs in cities and their surrounding construction, chooses Xi’an area’s geographical range in the strategic planning of Xi’an as research area, selects more than 50 archaeological excavated tombs (group) as representatives, conducted a situational research and classification statistics. Standing on the ground of exist protection model of larger sites, engaging with its own characteristics, this paper finally explores and summarizes several protection models for archaeological remains. This paper involves five parts:Chapter 1:To clarify the background and current status of the research, select the research object and range, and indicate research methodology;Chapter 2:The summary of the situation of Xi’an area archaeological remains in tombs and analyze problems;Chapter 3:Classification of study subjects in various classification methods, summarize the common attributes;Chapter 4:Extract the different protection models; Chapter 5:Summary and outlook.
