Adverbs, as a grammatical category, are always paid much attention to by scholars whether in Japanese or Chinese, which have received comprehensive and detailed study from its definition, structure to syntactic functions. We usually use adverbs as modifiers, modifying verbs, so are in Chinese and Japanese. That is to say, the adverbs are usually in non center position and functioned as general components of the sentences. Many scholars think adverbs in modern Chinese and Japanese can’t act as the predicate verbs in a sentence, while in practical application, we found they can act as the predicate verbs in certain conditions. The special usage of adverbs --- acting as the predicate verbs in a sentence, that is "Adverbial predicate words" or "Adverbial predicate structure" in this essay, has been referred to in Chinese and Japanese grammar study, but it’s not enough. When it comes to the systemic comparison between the Chinese and Japanese adverbial predicates, it remains to be discussed and studied. Therefore, I determined to make it as my thesis topic and do some discussion. My thesis consists of the following six chapters. The preface, a previous study, described the research significance、objects and structure of the thesis. The first chapter mainly summarized some of the major research achievements about adverbs predicate sentences up to now.The second chapter classified and analyzed the Japanese adverb predicate sentences according to its formation conditions and summed up its characteristicsThe third chapter classified and analyzed the collected Chinese adverb predicate sentences according to its formation conditions and summed up its characteristics. The fourth chapter is the focus of this thesis. It compared and analyzed the differences and similarities of the Chinese and Japanese adverb predicate statements from the aspects of morphology, structure and pragmatics. The fifth chapter concluded this thesis, and put forward the future research topics. There are three innovations of this paper:Firstly, the existence of Japanese adverb predicate sentences has been recognized by many scholars, but they didn’t paid much attention to it, and they just carried on the simple classification according to its formation conditions; this thesis collected a large number of samples, classified them according to its formation conditions, completed previous omissions and conducted a more comprehensive analysis and induction.Secondly, the research of Chinese adverb predicate sentences didn’t arouse enough attention. Lu Jianming is a pioneer in this area. This thesis, based on Lu Jianming’s research, not only illustrated Chinese adverb predicate sentences in detail but also conducted a concrete analysis from the syntax and pragmatics, etc.Thirdly, in order to understand the similarities and differences of the Chinese and Japanese adverbs predicate statements. This paper conducted a detailed comparison between the two studies.
