| Nowadays, an increasing number of Chinese companies are introducing their technology products into the global market. Accordingly, there is a growing demand for Chinese-English translations of user manuals. And how to translate various user manuals into natural English texts becomes an issue that needs to be explored urgently.Attempting to solve this issue, this paper introduces the concept of ―parallel text‖ into the study and takes the Touch Screen User Manual of Odin Technology Co.,Ltd. as a specific example, aiming at exploring how translators may apply parallel texts to Chinese-English translations of user manuals in order to improve the efficiency and quality of translations comprehensively. By collecting parallel texts of the similar field of the target text and making word frequency analysis, the author concludes appropriate style for the target text. In the stage of translation, by laying emphasis on words, sentences and discourses and by making comparisons among draft translations and translations referring to parallel texts, the author explores how to apply parallel texts in such matters as translating titles, terms, warnings and non-subject sentences, how to manifest logical relations implied in source language and how to perfect the expression and overall structure of the target text so as to meet the reading requirements of English readers.It is found in this study that parallel text plays an important and indispensable role in the practice of Chinese-English translations of technology products user manuals. And the goal of this paper is to enlighten translators to apply parallel texts in translation practice so as to provide some beneficial help in translating Chinese technology products user manuals into English versions. |
