NvShu, as a unique penmanship, has been employed by female residents of Jiangyong County in China for thousands of years.It is a fascinating genre of non-mainstream folk arts, whose access has been made exclusively obtainable to the local female population. Not only is Nvshu our precious legacy of culture, but also a consequential element of the world treasures of fine arts. Invaluable information extracted from the study focused on its origin and development may offer great contributions to research field pertaining to it. Take, for instance, the study on the origin of languages and civilization and the study on the genesis of Yao and female cultures. The artistic and aesthetic significance of Nvshu make it a marvellous representative of folk arts.In this paper, an insightful and exhaustive research on NvShu is presented, which exams Semeiology and Pattern Design Studies pertinent to it in a careful and thorough manner. The basis of the research is constituted by the information collected from investigation, interviews with masters of NvShu in Jiangyong, and studies on the local literature of Jiangyong.In the first place, we propose a comprehensive explanation for the primitive character styles, folk patterns, art values,and aesthetic connotations of NvShu via the avenue of studying the character styles and traditional female cultures.In the second place, we extract elementary elements from the character styles and traditional feminine patterns to generate new patterns in the way characterized by modern artistic expression, aiming at giving the NvShu modern aesthetic connotation and enhancing general public’s awareness of Nvshu.In the third place, it is vividly demonstrated that the ingenious application of NvShu’s traditional patterns and their derivatives integrated with modern technologies and products revive the old Nvshu penmanship.
