With the development of animation industry, the audiences are diversified increasingly and their aesthetic inclination is changing, modes of characterization also need to keep on development. Looking back on the history of the development of animation industry, numerous characters leave audiences deep impressions. By the evolving of people’s creative concept and aesthetic inclination, the villain is active in our animation works with their unique charm, whether their characterization is good or not, determines the quality of the whole work. Their effects can not be ignored.A villain comes from life. The people in real life are then divided into “good person” and bad person with the influences of social environment. The villain in cartoon works refers to the people who are opposite to the positive role and they are makers of contradictions. The stories will more ups and downs, and will be more amused. The villain characteristics have their diversity. The creation ways are not simply the way of “binary opposition”:Either good or bad, the villain appears as “a bad person” as soon as it came, until the story ends. The designer should focus on the creation of “complexity” and “diversity” of villain characteristics and design the villain to be flesh-and-blood and living humans. This article research the differences of character shaping and people character setting of villain between American and Japanese cartoon works, by contrasting the factors of social culture, national character and folk culture in the American and Japanese cartoon works. Also, on above basis, this article analyze villain characteristic in Chinese cartoon works, introspect inadequacies of villain characteristic in Chinese cartoon works, search for the development directions of villain characteristic in Chinese cartoon works combining with villain characteristic and excellent resources in foreign cartoon works.
