Opera originated in Italy in the late sixteenth Century. Till now, it has the history of more than four hundred years. Opera is regarded as the jewel of the crown of art in the history of development in west, as well as the benchmark to evaluate of the national artistic level. And it plays an important role in the classic music. Since reform and opening up, the cultural undertaking appears a prosperity scene along with the development of the comprehensive national strength of China. Owing to the introduction of foreign classic opera and opera localization and dissemination, more and more western classic operas are played in China. Many opera research specialists realized the broad prospect of opera in China, but there is a long way to improve the local opera by means of referring the advantages of western classic opera, selecting the essence and discarding the dross if the Chinese opera would play an important role in the global opera industry.The thesis takes the introduction, localization and dissemination of western opera as the clue and taking the Epolis’s version of Don Carlo, Verdi as the center in three representative versions, two western versions and one Chinese version. Through the comparison of sino-foreign differences in characters and singing, the research gives some theoretical basis and artistic ideas of how to act the Epolis better. In the mean time, the thesis analyze the reason for the differences in the aspects of social and political background, different aesthetic values, own experience of the singers, etc. Finally draw the conclusion of the weakness of combination western opera with local culture and forecast and raise some ideas of the development of Chinese opera. The structure is as follows:The thesis is composed of 4 chapters.Chapter 1. Introduction of the creation background and self value ofDon Carlo and overview of three versions. Providing the theoretical proof for the following comparison of the content of the opera and the conflict of the characters.Chapter2. Take Epolis as the clue. Compare different characters. Analyze the Sino-foreign difference of music image, costume, performance, stage design, band accompaniment.Chapter 3. Comparison of the two main arias of Epolis. Conclude the difference of the personal tone, singing skills, Interpretation of strength and etc as the theoretical base.Chapter 4. Summary of the character shaping, the common connotation individual performances through the three versions comparative study and analysis.Display the theoretical base and artistic ideas of how to shape Epolis, the character. In the meantime, analyze the reasons of exist of the difference and weakness of the opera localization. Finally raise personal idea on the development of the Chinese opera.
