| Zheng Xiaoxu(1860-1938) was a controversial figure and has experienced the most complex, the most enormous change and the most chaotic time in the modern history of China. As a cultural elite active in the Chinese politics for nearly half of a century, his official career was closely related with Japan for quite a long period of time. Zheng Xiaoxu’s attitude for Japan has changed in different life stages: from despise the Japanese in the late Qing dynasty to regarded it as a external force of restoration during the period of the Republic of China and Manchukuo period. Such change of attitude toward Japan, reflecting the number of people’ Japanese understanding exist in society at that time. This paper,taking the Diary of Zheng Xiaoxu as basic material and contemporaries’ works and the relevant files, documents, memoirs as supplementary materials,try to explains Zheng Xiaoxu’ different attitudes of Japan in different time. |
