A Translation Report On Xian Qing Ou Ji(Excerpts)

This thesis is a translation report of Xian Qing Ou Ji(Casual Expressions of Idle Feeling). The translator selects the Chapter Shengrong(Women and Beauty) as the source text. It is divided into four parts, including judging beauty, improving appearance, dressing and artistic talent and revealing the aesthetic culture for the females of that time. The translator tries to make an analysis of the translation version from the perspective of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG) in terms of cohesion by taking some examples of the translation, hoping that it can be a little of help to classics translation.This report is divided into four parts. Chapter 1 is the task description, including the brief introduction to the author of the book, the source text and the analysis of the source text, and then the requirements for the task. Chapter 2 introduces the process of translating, including the preparation work before the translation; the tools used when doing the translation and the modification as well as proofreading after the translation.Chapter 3 is the main body of the report--case study. The translation analysis is divided into two parts. The first part is the theory application, introducing the applied theory in detail. Then the translator analyses the translation from the perspective of Cohesion. Also, translation skills adopted during the translation are illustrated too.The second part is the difficulties the translator came across when doing intra-lingual translation and inter-lingual translation as well as the relevant solutions. Chapter 4summarizes the experiences and lessons the translator learned during the translation process, and points out the unsolved problems.
