According to the methods of predecessors, we selected the refusal language from the literature books to do our research. We redefined the Chinese refusal words, dividing the historical stages into five parts: Weijin Southern and Northern Dynasties, Tang and Song dynasties, the Yuan and Ming to the late Qing Dynasty, late Qing Dynasty to the May Fourth Movement, the May Fourth to the present. On base of it, we classified the refusal words, described the frequency of every kind of refusal language, analyzed the using the occasion of them, and found the characteristics and evolution.Through research, we found that there is nothing different in type of refusal word but something different in small kinds. The refusal words, presents the phenomenon like that. They developed from single to diversification, and then, trending to centralization. In terms of expression, they changed from written form to Spoken language. The refusal words change with the time, new words would replace the old ones, but some would be retained because of being widely used. In term of using occasions, the refusal words are neuter. Usually, they will appear with several types of refusal words or using other methods to assist to expressing. Therefore, various types of refusal words in each period did not change clearly on using occasions. The main value of this study is across the five historical periods of the refusal be classified and described, although there are still many deficiencies, hoping to do a useful complement to the diachronic study of domestic refusal.
