| This paper reports the results of an exploratory cross-sectional study of Chinese refusal speech acts by the second language learners of the two areas,Japan-Korean and Southeast Asia , who complete a free discourse completion questionaire designed to elicit refusal performance. Results show that all subjects, despite of their Chinese proficiency, can correctly express the content of refusals.Their semantic formulas become longer and the tactful strategies become more with the development of their language proficiency. However, learners' refusals still display obvious L2 learner's characteristics: overuse consolation and applogies; disable choosing strategies according to speakers' power and social status; underuse some other strategies; misuse pragmatic strategies in their resuals and so on due to multi-factors such as the Chinese proficiency, the influency of materials in textbooks, learners' Chinese pragmatic knowledge, etc.The second language learners of this two Asia areas, with the mutural cultural background, have many similarities in acquiring Chinese refusal speech acts .But mose of the students from Southeast Asia with Chinese origin apply Chinese refusal speech acts much better than students from Japan-Korean in addtion to interrogative tactful means. At last, some pedagogical suggestions are provided in two aspects: textbooks and teaching. |
