Emily Dickinson is a great American poetess with rare outstanding genius in the 19 th century. Emily Dickinson is one of the first poets who employ the synaesthesia technique in poetry creation. Synaesthesia in the poetry of Emily Dickinson has been researched before by some western scholars but few of them has given a systematic research.This thesis is an attempt to analyze and interpret the poetic effects of synaesthesia in Emily Dickinson’s poems. This thesis divides synaesthesia in Emily Dickinson’s poems into five types, and locates some examples to analyze its poetic functions separately, to demonstrate the importance of using synaesthesia in appreciating and creating poems, and to explore more significances.In this master’s thesis, the researcher utilizes the perspective of synaesthesia to interpret Emily Dickinson’s multi-layered works through analysis of artistic technique and synaesthesia images interpretation.
