Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is a great poet in19th America. After her death, her poems are appreciated by the public and catch great attention of the public. Her solitary life, and letters, as well as diaries arouse the great interest of the literary circle. Researches are also made in a multiple angles, multiple levels, multiple methods and lots of progresses are achieved. The search for self is a topic which western people are fond of in their literature. Meanwhile, Emily Dickinson’s poems are also imbued with the sense of self-disclosure and self-portraiture. Her unique personal lifestyle and some records about her life reveal her strong sense of self-awareness, and the unusual disclosure of this self-awareness makes her poems full of the to-be-filled blanks, which is what the researchers try to discover. This paper reveals the self awareness in Dickinson’s poetry. Based on the social environment of the19th America, and Dickinson’s diaries, this paper manages to analyze the reasons why her poetry is filled with self awareness. This paper includes three parts:the introduction, the main body and the conclusion.The introduction part briefly introduces the life story of Emily Dickinson and also the study of her at home and abroad. Based on that, this paper brings up the to-be-solved issue:Dickinson and self-awareness.The main body part includes three chapters:Chapter one interprets the meaning of self-awareness. Having considered the definition of this term on philosophy and psychology, the author points out that the definition of self-awareness on literature. That is In the process of understanding the self, people reflect on themselves about their spiritual-self and deep-self. This reflection actually is a kind of knowing about oneself in dealing with anxiety, fear, and death.In chapter two, the author analyzes Dickinson’s poetry and discovers the self-awareness which showed in her poems. They are the inferiority which the weak individual feels in solving problems to callous their anxiety, the rebellion which the weak individual feels in removing of the sense of inferiority, during which, the unique and independence in life and the novelty in poetry are adopted by the weak individual; the female consciousness which are reflected in the course of confirming their strength and win their identities; not limiting to the life which the survival construct, the weak individual turning into the death consciousness corresponding to death.In chapter three, the author analyzes the reason why the poetry is full of self awareness. In section one, the author analyzes the reason why the literary can perform self awareness. Throughout the history of western literature, which are imbued with self awareness. The author arranges in the way of history. They are inferiority which is in the seeking for self of the Greek and Hebrew literature, the rebellion which is in the course of personal awakening of Renaissance, the freedom which is in the course of individuality of the Romantic Movement, alienation and death which is in the seeking for self of the Century disease and Wilderness. In section two, based on why the poetry is full of self awareness, as well as the letters and the diaries of Emily Dickinson, this paper manages to deeply analyze the reasons why her poetry are filled with self awareness. The first one is the social influence of the19th America environment, and the second is Dickinson’s unique psychological model which is based on her some diaries. Her unique understanding about religion makes her struggled between God’s idea and man’s wish, her true feelings about fragile life make her turn to other aspects of the true meaning of life, just like she makes inquiries soul with a resistance heart constantly, even give her life to poetry. Her real feelings about depression and horror under the influence of patriarchal make her to find a woman’s strength in poetry.The conclusion makes a summary about self awareness in the poetry of Dickinson, and explains the reason why Dickinson chose the self awareness topic. In various kinds of American waves, Dickinson cannot be unaffected, though living privately in her house, her heart always is opened for poetry. She expressed her ideas in the way of poems. The author thinks that Dickinson wrote poems in a role of seclusion and rebellion, she followed the choice which is from her deep soul in order to find a peaceful and ideal self.
