Relationship Between Trait Coping Style In Army Male Recruits And Their Parentingstyle: Self-control As A Mediator

In today’s society, people spend much time on dealing with all sorts of events, the individual need to control their own behavior, thinking, language, and so on. Self-control means a kind of efforts by which people can overcome a series of impulses, or habitual behavior. It help people to regulate their behavior for conforming social norms or law. Previous research showed that the individuals with low self-control ability will be high risk to suffer negative mental or behavioral problems, such as excessive smoking, drinking, drug dependence, act of violence, irrational consumption, unhealthy eating habits of life, and so on. Rational self-control can lead to positive results, for example, excellent performance, health habit, good interpersonal, positive and calm etc.. It is our goals to let more people possess more reasonable self-control ability. In this study, we explored the trait copying style in the army recruits and their family and the social environment influence, and analysed their relationship and the role of self-control ability. Questionnaire survey was conducted for 392 new recruits in their physical examination by PBI(Parental Bonding Instrument), SCS( Self-control Scale) and TCSQ(Trait coping style questionnaire) in convenient sampling. T-test, Person correlation analysis and structural equation model were used in the study to explore how parenting styles of army recruits affect their trait coping style and the function of self-control ability.The study showed:the scores of negative coping for the army recruits with soldier relatives was lower than those of without soldier relatives.And the scores of positive coping for the army recruits with soldier relatives was higher tha those of without soldier relatives(P<0.05 or P<0.01).There is no significant difference in most self-control dimensions(such as impulse control,health habits,and focus on work,temperance entertainment) for army recruits with different education years(P>0.05),but there is significant difference in resist the temptation dimension(P<0.05).There was significantly positively correlation between care and encourage independent of parents and the scores of SCS(r=0.12~0.35, P<0.05 or P<0.01);There was significantly negatively correlation between parents controlling and SCS(r=-0.37~-0.15,P<0.01),and positively correlation between the negative coping scores and SCS(r=0.26;0.32,P<0.01).Self-control was a mediator between SCS and trait coping style.In military training for the future,we could set out to enhance the soldier’s self-control ability training,in order to enhance the individual’s ability to coping with stress events...
