Tried and True—Timed-tested Activities for Middle School is a science activity collection edited by many American excellent teachers from middle schools, published by NSTA press in2010. This book is constituted by 40 class science activities, five chapters, covering instructional strategies, biology, environment, physics and chemistry, which are all best works from those experienced teachers. The translations of these activities may bring them into Chinese class for middle school students, developing their process skills and critical-thinking skills, the ability to connect the scientific knowledge to their daily life and their capability of innovation by inquiry approach. This book consists of many science activities and their directions, being one kind of exposition. Exposition, one of the most common expression ways, is featured by plain, efficient and accurate, aiming to express what the writers want to deliver with concise and exact words. Therefore, the translation of exposition needs to pass the information in the most directive way with the most concise target language. During the translation, the text type theory by Katharina Reiss, dynamic equivalence by Eugene Nida and translation shifts by J.C. Catford are applied as the guiding theories. The main body of this paper is made up of three parts:(1) Task description, including translation requirement, introduction of authors and source material;(2) Process description, consisting of preparations, process of translating and quality control;(3) Introduction to the three main translation theories and case studies guided by the three theories; Finally, Conclusion, including brief discussion of the differences of expository expressions between English and Chinese to figure out the necessities to choose different translation theories.
