In recent years, Bakhtin’s theories in guiding language teaching have received influences at home and abroad. The thesis reviews and comments on these theories. And also, the thesis tries to conduct an experimental reform of teaching Chinese as a second language under the perspective of Bakhtin’s theories, focusing on foreign students’ Chinese learning motivation. A qualitative and quantitative study of Chinese learning motivation well conducted on sixty two intermediate foreign students in Chongqing University, with questionnaire and interviews based on Dornyei’s three-dimensional construction mode. The analysis data shows that foreign students’ Chinese learning motivation at an intermediate stage, depends a lot on teaching materials, teachers and study groups. Teachers should work on these factors to enhance learners learning motivation. From the perspective of Bakhtin’s dialogue theory, carnival theory and space-time theory, the thesis introduces Bakhtin’s theories into the trial teachings and focusing on material adaptation, activities and learner engagement at Chongqing University. Some positive results have occurred. Most foreign students’ Chinese learning motivation are changing for the better. This may indicate that the experimental reform of teaching Chinese as a second language under the perspective of Bakhtin’s theories, could have some theoretical significance and practical gains.Findings also show that, more attention should be paid to the learning situations and material writings or textbooks. Adaptation should be focused at a higher international perspective, to give students more chances for cross-cultural communication. Teachers should pay more attention to their own teaching styles, stimulating dialogues between them and students. This strengthens the interactions between each other and also creating a good learning atmosphere to improve students’ Chinese learning motivation as a whole.
