This thesis mainly focuses on verb-noun collocations of high frequency verbs. With the help of two Chinese learner English copora and an English native corpus, this thesis aims at improving the representation of VN collocations of HFVs in ECLDs by making a profound study of the performance of Chinese English learners in producing verb-noun collocations of high frequency verbs(HFVs).This thesis is mainly involved in three corpora: Chinese English Learner Corpus(CLEC), Written English Corpus of Chinese English Learners(WECCL) and British English Corpus(BNC). By means of Error Analysis(EA) and Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis(CIA), it is easy to conclude that the majority of the errors made by Chinese English learners can be mainly classified into five types: CSI errors,NTMT errors, IC errors, OECR errors and OGV errors.Based on the analysis of the errors, it is found that the current ECLDs are with some deficiencies in the presentation of verb-noun collocation information of high-frequency verbs. Firstly, they do not include enough VN collocations and arrange them in a user-unfriendly way. Secondly, they are lack of usage notes or error warnings to explain semantic preference of HFVs. Thirdly, they don’t discriminate synonyms through definition and no box is given for synonyms discrimination. Fourth, the vagueness of definition limits Chinese English learners in the production of VN collocations of high-frequency.Therefore, based on the Prototype Theory, this thesis aims to analyze the typological property of VN collocations of HFVs, put forward the principles of inclusion, categorization and presentation of VN collocations of HFVs, and then formulate a tentative model for the representation of VN collocations of HFVs in ECLDs.
