Translation Of Cultural Terms In Shi Tao’’s Huayulu Translated By Wang Hongyin

Shi Tao’s Huayulu(Being abbreviated as HYL below), as a classic in the art history of Chinese painting, has been honored as “a ‘cornucopia’ in the art of drawing as well as aesthetics” since it comes out. Collecting a considerable number of drawing techniques of Chinese landscape painting together with the essence of Shi Tao’s painting theories, HYL becomes an essential and necessary channel through which westerners can learn about the art of Chinese painting and painting theories.The present thesis, viewing from cultural perspective and by means of the research method of dissecting the etymological meanings, studies the translation strategies Wang Hongyin has adopted in dealing with terms of five types in HYL to preserve the cultural connotations endowed in them. In addition, the effect of Wang’s is being analyzed with the help of typical translation examples. After a detailed analysis of Wang’s cultural translation upon terms in HYL, his translation strategies have been summarized and some suggestions concerning translation of painting terms are put forward.The present thesis has obtained major findings as follows:1. Wang’s version is a source culture-oriented translation, which faithfully transmits cultural elements of the source text. Translating terms in HYL, Wang has employed three main strategies: creative interpretation and translation, poly-translation upon one term, and adopting terms’ conventional translation and transliteration, through which the cultural connotations of terms as well as the painting theories of Shi Tao have been successfully transmitted, and the aim of cultural communication is achieved.2. All terms of five kinds in HYL are simple in forms but deep and profound in connotations. What is more, they play a vital important role in conveying the essence of Shi Tao’s painting theories. Therefore, when translating terms like these, especially those in traditional Chinese classics, translators should pay special attention to the following five basic points: 1).etymological meaning; 2).basic conception; 3).collocational relationship; 4).contextual change; 5).systematical structure.
