A Report On The Translation Of English-Only Europe? Challenging Language Policy(Chapter 4)

This is a report on the translation practice. The original text comes from the fourth chapter of English-Only Europe? Challenging Language Policy written by Robert Phillipson. The chapter mainly introduces languages in European Union(hereinafter referred to as the "EU") institutions. Translation and interpretation at all the European institutions cost 0.8% of the total EU budget. This corresponds to two euros per year for each European citizen. Choice of which languages are upgraded to the supranational level as EU official languages is of great importance. Languages are regarded as mere practical tools of communication, the fundamental way in which languages create and shape the way we see and understand the world is ignored.In the process of translation, the translator adopts Communicative Translation Strategy respectively to make case analysis at lexical, syntactic and discourse level guided by Dynamic Equivalence Theory of Nida, Eugene A.The translator translates this chapter, hoping to provide reference for language policy makers at home and abroad to build a language policy based on equality in communication.
