The writing has important and irreplaceable status in the history of human civilization, so the study of the writing is vital too. Mr. Huang in his thesis named Opinion of the Generalized Writing presented that the research of the writing in the writing field has the precondition that ’the writing is a system of recording language’......the study of the writing brought into the research of the language and can not be a independent field. In other word, the study of the writing is not the generalized writing. Thus, we realized that the writing is different of the generalized writing, and they are relative. The generalized writing is a syntaxic research what with the center of writing under the view of the embryology. The research method of the generalized writing can exactly open up the way in the field of civilization that not only has systematic writing but also has not writing until now. This thesis is under the influence of the generalized writing, and from the perspective we can research the designs on the weavings of Navajo. This thesis is composed of four parts which are the foreword, the civilization of North American Indians and the Navajo, research of the types of the Navajo weavings and the character of the Navajo weavings under the view of the generalized writing, the conclusion and references and so on.The foreword mainly talks about the information of the thesis and the instruction of the materials referred in the thesis and selection of the topic, the importance and value of the topic and the method of research. The chapter, the civilization of North American Indians, firstly, instructs the composition of North American Indians which are the North, the East, the Southwest and the Northwest, and then instructs the Navajo in the Southwest. And the history of the Navajo in the Northwest. The theme of the Navajo weavings is abundant. According to the generalized writing and ex-writing, we divide the designs of the Navajo weavings into two typeswhich are pictographic designs and symbolic types. Pictographic types include animals, social life, religion belief and the patterns under the influence of the White people. Symbolic types are the designs which use symbolic methods to show the theme, for example, exaggeration, transformation and so on. What should be referred is that the symbolic types are not so simple as we can see from the patterns directly. In other words, they have deep meaning generally. We can learn the deep meaning of these designs by learning the knowledge of the Navajo tribe. This is the difference between pictographic types and symbolic types. After the dividing of the designs, we research the character. At the last of the chapter, according to the generalized writing, ex-writing and examples of the Navajo weavings, we think that the character of the Navajo weaving designs is pictographic ex-writing.At last, it is the summary. North American Indian has not systematic writing until now, so their culture and civilization is inherited by speaking. But, we realize the status and impaction of the patterns on Navajo weavings in the civilization of this tribe by this thesis.
