This is a paper taking a research on David Lodge’s novel Deaf Sentence from the angle of anxiety. The paper sets anxiety as the core clue by reading text in detail and taking anxiety of circumstances changing, anxiety of free choice and anxiety digestion as the main venations. Freud’s psychological analysis theory, existentialism and humanistic psychology are used as the theory basis, to analyze the main character’s anxiety problems in the novel and illustrates the way that the protagonist erase the anxiety.Apart from the introduction and conclusion, this paper consists of three chapters. Firstly from the Sartre’s view of relationship between circumstances and freedom. These two terms will be used to organize the framework of the first two chapters:the first chapter "anxiety of circumstances changing".mainly analyzes the four anxieties occurring after Desmond become deaf. With the loss of the identity and normal communication ability, sexual frustration and moral in imminent danger, he is suffering from these four aspects of anxieties. The second chapter "anxiety of free choice". Freedom is absolute and can’t be deprived, it is also the freedom of choice at the same time, the protagonist is faced with the freedom of to be or not to be during the battle with anxieties. The anxieties discussed in this chapter are analyzed from three aspects:how to life, choice and death, the positive and negative. The third chapter "anxiety digestion". The first two chapters mainly analyzes the causes of anxieties, while this chapter discusses what positive feasible solutions the protagonist use to solve the anxiety.The conclusion part indicates that, this paper, through the analysis of the anxiety, tries to reveal that how the writer David Lodge who is experiencing the similar experiences describes the predicament after his own epicophosis. Through describing the anxiety digestion in the fiction, the writer reveals the exploration of this particular life stage while at the same time, shows his affirmation and return to the positive attitude towards life after experiencing some mental confusions and struggles. By speaking for the marginal figures、the author also raises the attention and introspection of the readers, which makes his novel full of humanistic concern.
