He made many critic works and compiling works. He called himself "academic critic". After Henry James, Virginia Wolf and E.M. Forster, David Lodge is another person who is both a novelist and a critic. As an academic novelist, the topic of intellectual is what he most concerned. In his famous novels the protagonists are almost intellectuals. The present thesis firstly diffrenciates the conept of intellectual and then retrospects the tradition of Britain intellectuals. Secondly, it discusses the intellectuals confusion and lackness of humanism. David lodge is a writer with strong responsibility. Although in his works he always sneered at the intellectuals, he places his hope on them.The thesis consists of five parts:"Introduction", "Chapter One What is Intellectual", "Chapter Two What Intellectuals Do", "Chapter Three Holding on the Ideal in confusion",and "Conclusion""Introduction" aims to give a brief survey and introduction of David Lodge's literary creation and makes clear the writing purpose and perspective of the thesis."Chapter One What is Intellectual" is divided into two sections. The first section diffrenciates the conept of intellectual. The second section retrospects the tradition of Britain intellectuals."Chapter Two What Intellectuals Do" is subdivided into three sections. The first section analyses the intellectuals confusion, It includes four parts:knowledge without significance, conflict between matter and spirit, culture conflict, dialogue between literature and science. The second section analyses the intellectuals lackness of humanism: academy becomes business, scholars tend to philistinism. The third section attempts to study Lodge as an intellectual. As a writer with a critical eye, he insists on the importance of intercommunion and dialogue."Chapter Three Holding on the Ideal in Confusion" includes two sections:Fisher King resuscitate and Lodge's view of connection."Conclusion" attempts to summarize the implications of the character in Lodge s works. Although he claimed that he could not create the ideal intellectual, he still hold on pursuing the search of his ideal.
