The material of this translation report is excerpted from Yang-style Taijiquan, which is part of the Translation Project of Textbook Series of Chinese Wushu Duanwei System launched by Henan University and General Administration of Sport of China. There is not any English version of the Textbook Series that has been published. The translation task of Yang-style Taijiquan is done by the author and the three other translators collaboratively. The author translates Sections 3-4 of Chapter II, which has more than 10,000 characters in total. Its main content is illustrations of basic technical features, solo form, duel form and parry of the 3rd and 4th Duanwei of Yang-style Taijiquan. The author has searched various references related to Yang-style Taijiquan, including books, videos, Internet resources, etc. After a deep understanding of Yang-style Taijiquan, the author selects functional equivalence theory as an instructional throry for this translation task, which is suitable according to characteristics and style of Yang-style Taijiquan. Functional equivalence theory focuses on reproducing the cultural connotation of the source language, as well as the accuracy of the receptor language. It also treats reader’s response as a standard for measuring a piece of translated work. The author considers that the functional equivalence theory is a good theoretical guide for Wushu text translation. This translation report mainly consists of four parts, namely task description, process description, case analysis and practice summary. The task description is about the source of the translation task, a brief description of the original text and the significance of the project. The process description is about preparation of the translation, analysis of difficult points, existing problems and solutions. The case analysis is about the analysis of lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence, which is based on the functional equivalence theory. The practice summary is about the practical experience of the author. This report is aimed at spreading Yang-style Taijiquan to the overseas, promoting cultural communication of Chinese and foreign cultures and providing a reference for such kind of Wushu translation.
