The Translation Report Of Encyclopedia Of Contemporary Literary Theory: Approaches, Scholars, Terms (Excerpt)

This is a translation report on Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory: Approaches, Scholars, Terms. The translator selects some terms of the third part to put into translation practice, and then draw a conclusion from the translation process and difficulties.Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory as an indispensable tool for literary theorists, historians, scholars and students who study the contemporary literary criticism and culture, has no Chinese version so far. Therefore the translation has certain innovation. If the translation could be published later, many domestic scholars and readers can study and research in this field with this translation.This report is mainly divided into five parts: Part One is the translation project description, including translation task source, the introduction of the text and the meaning of this translation project. Part Two includes the text type theory of translation and its criteria. Part Three is the introduction to translation process, including preparations before translation, translation process and corrections after translation. Part Four is the analysis of translation examples, that is, from the point of difficulties in translation process, which is also the core of this translation report. Translator chooses Reiss’ s text typology theory as guidance. Because Resiss emphasized that the identification on text’s main function is very important. “The main function to deliver the original text is the determinant for translation measurement”(Resiss, 1989: 109). Resiss puts texts into three types: the expressive type, the informative type and the operative type. Encyclopedia belongs to the typical informational text. According to the text typology theory, the translation strategy of this type is to represent objects and facts, transmit referential contents and be explicitation as required(Munday, 2001: 74). Last Part summarizes the translation practice. Through this translation practice, the author deeply felt that being a good job in translation, as a qualified translator, we should strengthen the study of the theory of translation, master the method of translation and improve our comprehensive quality. Only combine both translation theory and translation practice, and continuously strengthen our own ability and learning in the translation practice, the quality of translation could be improved.
