Viatchslav Semionov--a famous Russian accordion player, composer and educator in Russian modern accordion history. Semionov was gifted with great talent. He composed loads of great accordion works with his genius thinking of music creation and modern composing technique. Among his accordion works, the character of accordion is fully developed and created and the expression of accordion is greatly enhanced. Sonata No.2 is his important composition for free bass accordion.This dissertation is broken into three parts:The first part is the introduction to Semionov and Sonata No.2. This part starts from a brief introduction of composer Semionov and Sonata No.2’s composition background and expounds from three aspects:firstly Semionov’s lifetime achievements, secondly an analysis of the composition background of Russian music in 20s century and the origin of Sonata No.2, lastly a brief introduction of the characters of Semionov’s compositions and his famous works.The second part develops a detailed analysis and elaboration of Sonata No.2. In this part, the author firstly introduces the development of every movement in Sonata No.2. Then follows a detailed elaboration of the movements and lastly the author provides a comprehensive analysis from the perspectives of form, melody, harmonic and rhythm regarding the characters of composition.The third part focuses on the performance keystones and artistic value of Semionov’s Sonata No.2. In the first quarter, the author analyses the performance points of the composition based on her own playing experience. This includes the techniques in controlling the bellows, the utilization of registers and suggestions and analysis of emotion assurance in the performance. This quarter aims to provide performers with guidance and reference. The second quarter discusses the ideological content of Sonata No.2. The third quarter emphasises the significance of Semionov’s creation in Sonata No.2 and in the modern accordion music. The author through providing above the comprehensive research and analysis, strives to assist the accordion performers in perfectly interpreting and performing this masterpiece which encompasses distinctive folk characters.
