| From the perspective of eco-translatology, translation attaches importance to the study on ―survival‖ and ―development‖ of translation community. Hu Gengshen believes that the essence of eco-translatology pays attention to ―ecology‖, ―life‖ and ―survival‖, the maintenance of the balance of textual ecology and the survival of the source text in target language context, the survival and development of translators in specific translational ecology, and the maintenance of the stabilization, coordination, balance and harmony of translational ecology, textual ecology and translation community.Differences exist between―Xing Dao Zhi Xue‖(性道之学),the learning of human nature and Tao in Chinese traditional thoughts and―philosophy‖in Western traditional thoughts in the means of expression,but the same essence is endowed with both of them–the pursuit of wisdom.Confucianism and Taoism are regarded as the―Xing Dao Zhi Xue‖,possess the same character with―philosophy‖and deal with the four important problems proposed by Kant:―What may I know?‖―What should I do?‖―What may I expect for?‖―What is human being?‖As the philosophical thoughts with Chinese characteristics,Confucianism and Taoism influence people all over the world.Zhang Chao, a poet as well as a philosopher in Qing Dynasty. Among all his works, Dream Shadows consists of 219 essays and is the most famous one for its beautiful language, profound philosophical thoughts and the appropriate interpretation by the translator Lin Yutang. Yet for now less people studied the English version of Dream Shadows and the survival and representation of the philosophical thoughts reflected in this book from the perspective of eco-translatology.This thesis takes Hu Gengshen‘s eco-translatology theory as a tool, the English version of Dream Shadows translated by Lin Yutang as the subject and descriptive translation as the translation approach to discuss and analyze the transformation, survival and representation of philosophical thoughts reflected in Dream Shadows. The process of translation is defined as the translator‘s selective adaptation to the translational eco-environment and adaptive selection to the target text. From the perspective of eco-translatology, Lin Yutang achieved the selective adaptation to translational eco-environment by means of his understanding of Confucianism and Taoism and the establishment of his personal philosophy as well as his bilingual and bicultural competence. On the other hand, he adaptively selected the target text and achieved the adaptive transformation of source text from three dimensions(culture, communication and language). Lin Yutang‘s selective adaptation and adaptive selection achieves the transformation, survival and representation of the philosophical thoughts reflected in Dream Shadows in a high degree of holistic adaptation and selection.Through the comparative analysis of the source and target text and that of the author and the translator, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) According to the nature law ―survival of the fittest‖ and ―preserve the strong and eliminate the weak‖ Lin Yutang‘s personal philosophy, bilingual and bicultural competence selectively adapt to translational eco-environment. While fitness is the basis of survival and survival is that of development, which lays the foundation for the survival and development of target texts in translational eco-environment. 2) The process of translator‘s adaptation to the translational eco-environment is as well as the process of translators being selected by the translational eco-environment. Specifically, on the basis of the translator‘s selective adaptation to the translational eco-environment, the philosophical thoughts reflected in Dream Shadows transmit, survive and represent in translational eco-environment by means of translator‘s adaptively selection to target text from three-dimensional transformations(language, culture and communication). 3) From the perspective of eco-translatology, Lin Yutang achieves the selective adaptation to the translational eco-environment and adaptive selection to the target text from multiple dimensions in the process of translation, which makes contribution to the transformation, survival and representation of philosophical thoughts reflected in Dream Shadows in a high degree of holistic adaptation and selection.The thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the research background, purpose and significance of the research, and the structure of the thesis. In the second chapter, on the basis of the review of previous research, the necessity of the present research is stated. The third chapter is the interpretation of theoretical foundation of the thesis – Hu Gengshen‘s eco-translatology. The fourth chapter is the research design including research questions, research method and data collection. The fifth chapter is the main body of the thesis, in which the problem of transformation, survival and representation of philosophical thoughts reflected in Dream Shadows in translational eco-environment will be explored. In the last chapter, conclusion and limitations of the research will be listed. |
