Based on Pearl S. Buck’s works, this thesis uses religious facts and plots to restore the true idea of Pearl S. Buck and to find the reasons and internal connections of her religious consciousness in different time through intensive reading.This thesis consists of three parts, including introduction, body and conclusion.Chapter one illustrates how Pearl S. Buck’s religious consciousness comes into being by three aspects that are missionary family, Chinese traditional culture, and missionary experience. Chapter two mainly depicts three typical Christians in Pearl S. Buck’s works,who are Kelly, Absalom Sydenstricker and Andrew respectively. The parents of Pearl S.Buck are totally different Christians with different characteristics, from whom Pearl S.Buck learns how to dialectically treat overseas missionary works of Christians. Andrew shows Pearl S. Buck’s religious ideas. Chapter three starts from Paternalism discourse pattern and then discusses details and language styles of Pearl S. Buck’s works and finally concludes that Pearl S. Buck writes as a Christian. Chapter four focuses on Pearl S. Buck’s novel Peony, which shows the process and reason why people with different religions could come to have a religious dialogue. The conclusion part briefly reviews Pearl S.Buck’s mental thinking about religion all her life. After witnessing suspicion and conflict between religions, she puts forward “the world are one”, which is her ideal vision for future world.
