The Book of Songs, like a beautiful picture, depicted a colorful life of people in Zhou Dynasty and the love songs in this picture are thick and heavy in colors. Images are the soul of poetry. This thesis attempts to profoundly interpret the emotions and contents of love songs and insight Zhou people’s emotional world and love and marriage life by learning their marriage values and folkways. Meanwhile, it attempts to learn about the culture of Zhou Dynasty from this perspective.The first chapter interprets the images of animals in The Book of Songs. It consists of four parts which discuss the images of birds, beasts, fish and insects respectively. The second chapter interprets the images of plants, and it includes two parts interpreting the images of herbages and woods respectively. The third chapter explained the images of location. The chapter consists of three parts which explain the images of water, land and others. The last chapter focuses on the images of entities. It concludes six parts involving the images of costume, accessories, food, natural scenery, tools and instruments.In this thesis, the image categories, summarized from the previous love songs which have been defined, are interpreted approached by combining with the contents of the poetry and the emotions expressed in the poem. During the process of explanation, this thesis pays attention to the cultural phenomenon of the Zhou Dynasty. In order to interpret clearly, each image is classified by species, themes as well as emotions.The final part draws a conclusion to all images, and summarizes the cultural connotations and the functions that these images express.
