Study On Huanglong Huinan And His Zen Thought

Huanglong Huinan is a famous zen master in Chinese history, who got acquaintance with dharma, cloud gate and so on at an early age, and finally got absolute realization with Chu Yuan’s teaching. He successively advocated Buddhism in four temples along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze, especially magnificent in the Huanglong temple. The grand scene can compare favorably with Matsu Daoyi and Baizhang Hui Hai of Tang dynasty. The greatest achievement Huanglong Huinan made is starting famous "Huang Longpa".There are three main reasons for that Huanglong Huinan sets his fashion. First of all, Huinan’s Zen based on mind-nature theory which contains no need with the help of things outside,results created by oneself and natural essence.Secondly, Huinan’s Zen takes the advantages of various theories, presenting a sense of the diversity.Thirdly, Huanglong Huinan renounces all common ideas with three shuts,which requires thinking by oneself without any idea. Three shuts seems impossible,but integrates the mahayana Buddhism thought and complete Zen meditation brilliantly. Consequently, in Song dynasty, such a good situation where the literary style was prosperious and the officials were keen on the Zen, Huinan’s zen became quite popular in both priests and laity.Huang Longpa basically just inherited one century, why? There are several causes behind this boom-bust. Four generations of Huinan’s disciples lived in the mountain "towers the folding of the red light". They only paid attention to Buddha dharma but not advertised it. In addition, Huinan’s zen embarked on the self-narrowed road as a result of its recovery on linji’s simple bright style, which embodied in the zen "Huanglong three shuts ".The gate seems serious like linji but lose the magnificent feeling,meanwhile the risk of roars is prohibitive. But anyway,Huinnan’s theory of mind and zen thought that against the words of kudzu play an important role on the construction of modern social spiritual civilization and value pursuit of life.
