Sui Tang and the Five Dynasties is the transition time in ancient China. In the aspect of politics and culture, this period summarized the history of Wei Jin Southern and Northern dynasties, and also open the age of North and South Song Dynasties. That’s why we should pay more attention to consider and discuss the politics and culture to these dynasties. We should merit attention to the politics and culture that reacting from the granting names which is a common political phenomenon in Sui Tang and the Five Dynasties.And this graduation thesis is about compiling, organizing and study the literature of granting namnes in Sui Tang and the Five Dynasties. The first part is compiling and organizing, the second part is study.The first part is according to the time sequence compiling, organizing the scattered historical materials. These historical materials are distributed in the different ancient classics, such as Old tang book, New tang book, Ce fu yuan gui, Zi zhi tong jian. In the graduation thesis, they will arranged well.The second part is after reviewing the granting names phenomenon in ancient China by time, this thesis firstly presents granting names phenomenon in Sui, Wu De, and Empress Wu period, then presents the phenomenon of Tang Dynasty granting names to different races, the phenomenon of Tang Dynasty granting names to military governors and the ethos of nominal foster son in The Five Dynasty.The Chapter One reviews granting names phenomenon in ancient China. The granting names phenomenon, especially the family granting names is a phenomenon that has existed long time ago. In Sui Tang and Five Dynasties, this phenomenon reached the peak.The Chapter Two presents the granting names in Sui Dynasty. The time of Sui Dynasty is highly short and granting names examples in that time are less. The only three examples are Da Yi Princess, Yang Yichen and Lu Taiyi. But these examples especially represent the granting names to former imperial clan, military meritocracy and their descendants, and represent the ethos of advocating aristocratic family.The Chapter Three presents granting names phenomenon in Wu De Period. In Wu De Period of the beginning of Tang Dynasty, the nation government was not in stabilization and external powers threatened to the state. In this situation, the granting names objects were the feudal princes and military officers which had military forces. From the granting names to Shi Danai and Bing Can, we can see the praising and honoring to meritorious statesmen in the beginning of the state.The Chapter Four presents granting names phenomenon in Empress Wu period. Empress Wu replaced the Tang Dynasty with Zhou, which was a huge event in earlier stage of Tang. Empress Wu took the methods of armed suppression and granting the filthy names for revenging the competitors before her taking the place and the Li Tang imperial clan who opposed her. The granting names phenomenon was created by Empress Wu’s subjective factors in this period, such as Mo Chuo, Xue Huaiyi, Xu Siwen. The granting names to women appeared in this time for the reason of Empress Wu’s gender. On the other side, Empress Wu never grudged to grant the names to the officers who were loyal to her.The Chapter Five presents granting names to different races in Tang Dynasty. The society atmosphere was on-limits in Tang Dynasty and tha nation was very powerful. For that reason, the state was attractive for minority. So granting names to different races was in common. We can see the national relations and frontier defense situation of Tang Dynasty from the granting names to different races, which reacts national power of the state.The Chapter Six presents the phenomenon of Tang Dynasty granting names to military governors, especially the three military governorships in He Shuo. After An Lushan Rebellion, the relationship between the Tang Dynasty central government and local military governors is an important subject. From the Emperor Suzong to Emperor Xizong of Tang, the successive emperors had the records of granting names and family names to military governors, which reflected how frequently the events of granting names to military governors happening. We can know that the granting names events frequently happened to three military governorships in He Shuo and this kind of granting names is more representative. They even initiatively to ask for granting names and regressing family names. We can intuitively feel the vicissitude of Tang Dynasty and the force of central government controlling military governors from the granting names to military governors.The Chapter Seven present the ethos of nominal foster sons in The Five Dynasty. The time of The Five Dynasty was not much longer, but the granting names happened frequently, especially in Later Tang Dynasty which declared their ancestry is Tang. In this period, having foster sons formed an ethos, whose source was the granting names phenomenon. And having nominal foster sons is kind of granting names. We can analyze the having nominal foster sons by the ethos of battling military officers.
