Space is an important part of Dickens’ s novels which stands for his consideration of social reality. Studying the space forms in Dickens’ s novels plays an important role in the further understanding of his novels. The space of capitalism is described in Dickens’ s novels: living space invaded by commodities, production space permeated by capital and third space refusing assimilation. Space in his novels represents the characteristics o f the times after the Industrial Revolution was initially completed: on one hand, it represent the progresses of modern technology; on the other hand, space change resulted from industrial capital also leads to various space problems.Space in Dickens’ s novels highly corresponds to the modernity of industrial civilization production with specific performance such as separation, division and expansion. Significant society change which result from the capitalist system and the progress of technology is the premise of space separation. “Separation” innovates temporal and spatial experience and modifies the relationship between human beings and the world; “Division” products lots of new spatial framework; “Expansion” releases the temptation of money and expanded material desire further.Space order in Dickens’ s novels is presented. Order is an effective way to function the space well at the same time it is a power in space. Production order in his novels is also the production of capitalist society: it is the capital that rules the human beings; Authority order in the space indicates the unbalanced relation of authorities of social life which controls man through the space; Moral order in the space shows polybasic and complicated capitalist senses. In his novels, men not only surrender to space constraints reluctantly but also seek for the redemption in space and discover beauty on their own initiative. Men can feel the pulse of life in the silence built by natural space and experie nce poetic feelings of surviva l; although city space is full of social darkness, men also can find the beauty beyond the rich in prosperous scenes and goods if they resist the extravagance of modern civilization; In religion space, men complete the redemption of the soul through the baptism of spirit. It seems that Dickens especially intends to feel beauty, discover hopes and seek for redemption possibilities in the space.
