A Study Of The Space Of Dickens

Dickens is a typical city writer.He is the observer,the loafer and the writer of the Metropolis London.Most of his novels are based on London in the Vitoria period.In the novels,various kinds of urban spaces such as prisons,schools,courts,parliaments,railways,factories,workshops,taverns and homehouses are built.These spaces are not only the background of the events in their novels,but a dynamic space field rich in characterization.Therefore,relying on the new spatial theories such as space narration and space criticism,it is feasible and necessary to study Dickens' novel space construction way,narrative method and modernity representation significance.This can deepen the readers' understanding of classical literary works and make Dickens' novel gain new value and significance in the present.Besides the introduction and conclusion,the main body of this dissertation consists of five chapters.The introduction explains why the author chose the space of Dickens'novel as the topic,and its research significance,research status,research approaches,research contents and original points of the dissertation.The first chapter mainly analyzes the relationship between Dickens'research and space theory,and explores the correspondence between literary space criticism and Dickens' research.This chapter first combed the evolution of the concept of space in the history of western philosophy.Secondly,this chapter studies the relationship between space steering and literary space criticism,and combs the path and methods of literary space criticism.Finally,this chapter discusses the feasibility of the study of Dickens' novel by space theory.Chapter Two:the characteristics of the London space of Dickens'novel.Dickens is a writer living in the city.His novels set up a variety of space fields,such as prisons,schools,courts,parliaments,railways and factories.This chapter comprehensively grasps the characteristics of Dickens' novel space from the whole to the individual,from the specific to the leisure.Secondly,the author classifies the space in Dickens' novel with the function of space as the classification standard.Chapter Three:The spatial construction of Dickens' novel.The space in Dickens' novel is the space constructed by the author,based on the space in the real world,using the language as the medium and using various narrative techniques.In this chapter,we first distinguish the concepts which are easily confused with the space in the novel in the research process,and lay a solid foundation for the study.Secondly,the author explains the form of Dickens,novel space from several angles,such as boundary,scale,density,dimension and level.Finally,the author focuses on the study of the space construction techniques of Dickens'novel.Chapter Four:The spatial narration of Dickens' novel.The space in Dickens' novel is not just the background of the events,the stage of the story.It use that space in the novel to make the layout,build the image of the character,drive the process of narration,etc.Based on the theory of spatial narration,this chapter discusses the narrative function of Dickens'novel space from the perspectives of the narrative function and narrative strategy of Dickens' novel space,and finally points out that the space elements and time of the narrative in Dickens' novel must not be divided into one another.Chapter Five:A study on the urban space modernity of Dickens'novel.The space that Dickens constructs in the novel is basically the space in the city.And the urban space is the best sample of modern space production.Based on the urban space theory of Benjamin,Raymond Williams and mike krone,this chapter discusses the modern experience of urban space in Dickens' novel and the significance of modernity in each urban space.Conclusion:Dickens is the writer of urban space in the age of change.In the novel,he constructs a hybrid and diverse urban space,and uese these spatial spaces to plot the layout,shape the characters and express thematic ideas.Therefore,the study of Dickens' novel can not only take the space in the novel as the background of the event,the stage of the story,and ignore its narrative significance and value.
