It is over half a century since 1946 that Arabic major has been founded in Peking University. Nowadays, its impressive development has been vitally attributed to the efforts and dedication which were made by the first Arabic teachers. Both of their professional level and teaching methodology and philosophy are worth being reflected and absorbed.This thesis includes four chapters. The first chapter, Introduction, relates thesis’s significance, research status in this field and research methods.The second chapter is to mainly present the retrospection of overseas students in Egypt during the Republic of China. Three subtitles of this chapter are concerned with different aspects of these students’ activities in Egypt, the first describing the initiation and organization of the study abroad in Egypt, the next one relating the whole course of their study in Azhar University and last one being about what happened after they returned to home.The third chapter mainly deals with the establishment and construction of Arabic major after the founding of New China. It is comprised of two parts, the first one illustrating the important role of the development of Sino-Arabian countries relationship in building up Arabic major and the other one focusing on its development in high schools by exemplifying Arabic major in Peking University and Beijing Foreign Studies University.The forth chapter mainly analyzes and summarizes the overseas students’ contribution for the development of Arabic major, which consists of three parts. The first part is to recall and analyze these predecessors’ requirement to the major and attitude to students in terms of teaching; the next part concentrates on their capacities of academic researches, teaching and communication from the perspective of professional quality; and the last one concludes their contribution to discipline construction and teaching innovation.The last chapter is summary.There are few academic researches when it comes to Arabic teaching in the high schools, especially in terms of pedagogy. This thesis, however, overviews the development of its construction and progress, and employs pedagogy to analyze predecessors’ teaching ideology and experience. Based on that, this thesis is supposed to come up with its ideas which make positive contribution to its development.
