English for special purposes refers to English related to a particular career or subject.Since the new revision of the college English teaching requirements for ESP in 2004,the universities have sped up the process to push forward the reform of college English,trying to open a variety of ESP courses,to make the college English teaching in conformity with social needs.However, over the last decade,there is no set of complete system in the curriculum of English for special purposes,reform on the teaching method and teaching content has been made only in the top universities according to their own distinctive characteristics.During the last decade, Characteristics of integrated school-running in domestic universities have been increasing,while concepts of running a school have been weakened. Such as Peking University and domestic first-class comprehensive university,because of the high quality of teaching staff and the high expenditure of teacher training,reform on college English becomes more and more burgeoning,lots of experience has been accumulated on teaching method, teaching content and curriculum setting in these universities.But in local comprehensive colleges and universities,especially colleges and universities in the Midwest,it seems that they are still in the exploration of English for special purposes.Most of universities are still at groping stage from the aspects of ESP course system,teachers training,ESP teaching methods,teaching contents and curriculum evaluation.ESP is a kind of English course according to the learner’s particular purpose and specific-requirements.On the basis of literature research,article-made questionnaires according to the learners’ purposes of learning ESP, learners’demand for the teaching content,learners’demand for materials, learners demand for teaching methods, learners demand of course assessment.The study selected 300 juniors and seniors from Nanchang Institute of Technology,the curriculum designer,and seven instructors as the research object,through the survey and interviews,to know the basic demands of English for special purposes of learners’,teachers’,and employers’.At last through statistical software EXCEL data form to analyze acquired carefully, according to the results of questionnaire survey and interviews, ESP curriculum problems in Nanchang institute of technology include:Unreasonable curriculum-framework,not-clear teaching goals, the lack of a comprehensive curriculum requirements,weak teachers strength, lagging teaching methods, not high quality of teaching material content and arrangement and not reasonable course evaluation.The research puts forward some suggestions to solve these problems,including setting up dynamic and circulating course framework,clear course positioning, the demand of comprehensive analysis, strengthening the construction of teaching staff,strengthe.ning the ESP teaching material construction and creating a reasonable and scientific curriculum evaluation system.Hoping that through setting ESP courses can improve learners’ English comprehensive quality;meet the needs of learners,teachers and society. On the other hand,hoping that through this study can provide some experience for setting ESP courses in local comprehensive university.
