Since College English Curriculum Requirements has been made in2004, greatattention paid to the English for Specific Purposes(ESP). To meet the needs of thesociety, all colleges and universities began to reform the college English by creatingvarious ESP courses. However, all the universities are at the exploratory stage and hasnot been fully developed, because of the absence of a complete and unified curriculumsyllabus. Many experts and scholars devoted themselves to explored ESP, but they spentmuch time on the research of the teaching methods and contents, not place an emphasison course design. Therefore, the author tried to discuss the present situation ofChongqing University ESP course design. In order to study the characteristics andproblems of it, the interview and questionnaire were used, which made by combiningthe literature research and Chongqing University’s current situation. At last, somereasonable advices were provided.The results show that the curriculum model of ESP in Chongqing University isfeasible in theory, and it contains five basic elements: needs analysis, syllabus, teachingmethods, teaching material and course evaluation. But there are still some problems inthe implementation process:(1) it lacks the social needs and market demands. Needsanalysis is the characteristic of the ESP, it demands the person who is in charge ofcurriculum not only pay attention to the students’ needs, but also conduct acomprehensive analysis of the needs of society. Only combinate the both can provide abetter scientific basis for the specific curriculum.(2) the teaching methods areold-fashioned and the teaching contents are too fixed to satisfy the students’ changingdemands. In order to adapt to the changes of the teaching subjects, the traditionalteaching contents and teaching methods should be reformed.(3) it has not enoughteachers to teach. It becomes a huge bottleneck which restrict the development of ESP.Therefore, it is essential to train teachers through a variety of ways. Finally, the authormade some superficial recommendations, such as the demand for a comprehensive andintegrated analysis, optimize the structure of courses, update course contents in a timelymanner, strengthening the teaching staff,etc.As an emerging major, ESP is the direction of the future development of collegeEnglish, though there are still many problems. Therefore, whether the educationdepartment, or the colleges, teachers and students should pay more attention to it. They should mainly focus on the development of ESP and course design, in order to give thegood examples for the other universities, satisfy the needs of the social development,and also provide a strong guarantee for the healthy development of the college students.
