| Koryo Celadon, which produced during koryo period (918-1392), is the peak work of ancient ceramics craft in Korean Peninsula. The study of Koryo Celadon is becoming a popular topic. Among numerous research subjects, the origin of Koryo Celadon and the relationship between Koryo Celadon and Yue kiln are overwhelmingly important. This paper will probe the time of Koryo Celadon’s birth, and study on Yaosiqian Yue kiln to discussing the relationship between Yaosiqian Yue kiln and the origin of Koryo Celadon.Through the investigations on several aspects, such as archaeological excavation of the early Koryo Celadon sites, the transmission mode of Yue kiln’s porcelain technology, the management system of the early Koryo Celadon kilns, and the social factors related to the origin of Koryo celadon, it is concluded that Korea Government brought Yue kiln craftsmen to the Korean Peninsula to guiding their Guan kilns production. The time of Koryo Celadon’s birth is Wuyue State period in the Five Dynasties, the upper limit is AD 918 when Wang Jian established Korea, the lower limit is AD 960 when Zhao Kuangyin established the Northern Song Dynasty, and the most likely time is 936-941.As Wuyue State period in the Five Dynasties is the most prosperous period of Yue kiln, there are many Yue kiln sites of the Five Dynasties in Shanglin Lake of Cixi, Dongqian Lake of Ningbo and Yaosiqian of Shangyu. There is a record, in ancient documents, said "there were 36 Guan kilns" in Yaosiqian of Shangyu. And this site unearthed a number of high-quality ceramics of Yue kiln. Then through the comparative study of Yaosiqian Yue kiln and the early Koryo Celadon in furnace, sagger and burning, formula, shape and decoration pattern, we can find out that the porcelain technologies of Yaosiqian Yue kiln and the early Koryo Celadon are very similar. And the operation management modes of both are also similar. So it is concluded that the porcelain technology which lead to Koryo Celadon’s birth may come from Yaosiqian Yue kiln. |
