Wang Yangming’s Philosophy of the Mind is one of the “open classes of world-renowned universities” programs launched by NetEase. It is given by Professor Dong Ping from Zhejiang University. Mr. Dong expounds Wang Yangming’s philosophy of the Mind comprehensively and systematically, and elaborates on its main ideas and propositions along with the overall development of Neo-Confucianism in Song and Ming dynasty. Mr. Dong also brings some unique opinions on some of Wang’s main ideas based on his study on Wang Yangming over the years in order to help students further understand the quintessence of Wang Yangming’s thoughts. The subject of this interpreting report is the first two classes of Wang Yangming’s Philosophy of the Mind—Introduction: Wang Yangming and His Philosophy of the Mind and Mind is Principle: the Logical Origin of Wang Yangming’s Philosophy of the Mind. This report firstly makes an analysis of the historical and cultural background of Wang Yangming’s time; then comes the case study of the language use in this open class. Along with the usage of some necessary philosophical terms, Professor Dong Ping adopts a relatively colloquial way of expression in order to make it easier for students to understand. But a casual way of speaking sometimes can be fragmental and lack of logic. Then this report gives a further analysis of the wording and sentence choices of the interpreting texts based on the interpretive theory and transcodage method. The problems that the interpreter encounters during the interpreting and some solutions are presented as well.
