This E-C translation is Komatsu Hydraulic Excavator PC20R-8 & PC27R-8 Operation and Maintenance Manual, which is about excavators’ performance, specifications, methods of use, maintenance etc.. The whole text consists of six chapters, including foreword, information on safety, introduction, product identification, safety and accident prevention, safety, noise and vibration plates, general precautions, precautions to be taken before starting the engine, precautions to be taken when working, transporting the machine on motor vehicles, battery, precautions for the removal, precautions for maintenance. The translated part covers 51 pages, about 13500 words, and has been finished in one month. It belongs to science and technology exposition in the text type and has its own special features.This report also truthfully describes the background and significance of the translation, source text analysis and requirements from the entrusting party, translation process, case analysis, and conclusion, in which the translation process consists of pre-translation preparation, translation tools, resources and parallel texts the author searched, the guided translation theory and strategies the author chose, translation plan and glossary, and quality control-evaluation and feedback. In the last part, the problems and deficiencies appear in the whole translation process have been summarized and specific solutions have been put forward by the author, with the hope that the fault and deficiencies have been less and less like in this translation and this report can be regarded as a reference for future scientific translation.The author chooses the “Skopos Theory” as the guiding theory in this translation practice, which was advanced in 1970 s by Vermeer who has got rid of the theory that all should concentrate on language equivalence. He pursues that translation methods should be guided by the readers and commissioners’ purposes and requirements, which can be put in short: objective determines the process.
