As the greatest famous works of fantasy literature, Tolkien’s The King of the Ring tell a story that people leave their hometown, set foot on journey and experience all kinds of hardships and perils to protect the wonderful world. and the journey just takes responsibility for organizing the whole structure of this novel, it drives the plot to advance and show us the magical middle-earth. Travle is a complicated activity including time and space, inside and outside. Comparing with the fixed place, journey is incomparable open and inclusive. It breaks the differences between lowliness and nobleness, and makes people who cannot meet usually meet each orther on journey.As we know, Journey is unstable and unpredictable. which can help authors use their imagination to write. This shows that the journey plays an important role in The King of the Ring.“Journey”is an eternal target in western literature. Literature tradition must have an effect on later authors in some degree. At the same time, the authors’ experience can also affect their creation. ToTolkien, the experience on his life provide many important materials for his writing. On the foundation of analysing the source of the writing of journey, i study the details of it. In the text, the diferent places compose Tolkien’s splendid Middle-earth including Shire, Bree, Rivendell, Lothlorien and so on. The journey is diversiform and authentic, and it can strike the real world.There are three kinds of modes on the writing of journey in the text. The first one is a journey adventure structure called “Departure- return ”, it is clearly reflected in that the protagonists leave their homes to embark on the journey, suffer difficulties and eventually return to their homeland; the second one is a journey growth structure called “pilgrim-Supervisor”, this growth structure is made up of the Pilgrims walking in the journey and the supervisors guiding the travel. the wise mentor like Gandalf,the hero mentor like Aragorn and the civilian mentor like Sam all have an irreplaceable effect on the Pilgrim Frodo; the third one is a journey contrast structure called “local- exotic”, the contrast between different countries, different races and contrast between the real world and the second world all make Torkin’s works more meaningful.Tolkien put many efforts into the writing of journey, which makes the journey occupyies an important position in the book. On the content side, it portrays a magnificent world and fulfils the reader’s imagination to foreign lands. On thestructure side, it forms the whole structure of this novel and drives the plot to advance,and become the clue of the plot. On the spirit side,It reflects a kind of unshakable faith to peace and light, a kind of courage when you in face of difficulties but still choose go ahead resolutely, a kind of restraint and salvation to the explanation of desire.
