Chinese Cartoon Theory Constructed In Republic China

Chinese cartoon theory constructed in Republic China is one of the most important contributions to Chinese cartoon theory. It has experienced several stages in its process of developments in history, which went from the rudimentarily scattered viewpoints of cartoons to the stage of the heated discussions and theory-based monographs on cartoons systematically appeared on the newspapers and periodicals.This paper intends to exam the process of cartoon theory construction existed in the period of Republic China with the methods of historical and literary analysis.The paper consists of five parts: introduction, initial study of the background of the booming cartoon creation, initial construction of cartoon theory, systematization and maturity of cartoon theory, and conclusion.Introduction elaborates significance and purpose of thesis and the research status both overseas and domestically. Chapter one exhibits the prosperity of cartoon creation from these three dimensions: cartoonist team, cartoon magazines and publication of cartoon, and also analyzes the conditions of cartoon theory. Chapter two, the initial cartoon theory construction, makes a summary of various problems of the discussion on cartoon theory at that time, mainly based on magazines, papers and passages about cartoon on the proceedings, e.g. Manhua shenghuo, Manhua yu shenghuo, Duli manhua, Xiaopinwen he manhua etc. and also summarizes the thoughts of representative figures at that moment including the thoughts of Lu Xun and Feng Zikai. Chapter three takes cartoon theory monographs as the main opponents of discussion objects. Manhua gailun(Liu zhenqing) and Manhua de yanjiu(Xiao Jianqing) marked the systematized construction of cartoon theory and Manhua yishu jianghua(Huang Mao) and Manhua de miaofa(Feng Zikai) made the theory of cartoon appeared in the period of the Republic of China further mature.Ultimately, this paper has summarized the relations between arts and times by comparison and analysis of monographs of cartoon theory and gets to the conclusion that cartoon theory created and existed in the Republic of China has positivesignificance for the modern cartoonists and cartoon theorists to draw on in building up modern cartoon theory in the new age.
