Firstly, a brief review on the history of Skopostheorie in functionalist translation studies is done and the three guiding principles proposed by Vermeer, the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, are introduced. Next, the definition, functions and language characteristics of a movie review are presented to illustrate the skopos of English-Chinese movie review translation. And then, the author of the thesis discusses how to select appropriate strategies in accordance with the skopos of the translation with the examples from the Chinese and English versions of 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (8th Edition), a best seller published by the Central Compilation & Translation Press. Finally, the thesis reveals that English-Chinese movie review translation is a purposeful communicative action. The translator should follow the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule based on the skopos of the translation in the process of English-Chinese movie review translation. The possible translating methods to realize the skopos of the translation include word for word translation, annotation, free translation, amplification, preposing, division, postposing, combination and reorganzation and so on.
