Movie review is an essential part of cinematic culture. It is an important reference not only for movie goers to decide which movie to watch but also for the professionals in filmmaking, scholars and movie fans to interpret and evaluate the movie. In the era of globalization, the intercourse of movie culture between China and the western countries is further deepened. In China, more and more professionals in filmmaking, scholars and movie fans have the opportunity to deal with English movie reviews. However, the quality of current translation for English movie reviews is not so satisfying whereas researches on translation of movie reviews are not systemic and comprehensive enough. The demand of superior translation of English movie reviews and the deficiency of in-depth researches on movie review translation indicate the significance and necessity of studying English-Chinese movie review translation.English-Chinese movie review translation aims at removing the English language obstacle for Chinese readers so that they can grasp the information such as the art value, filming techniques and the cultural knowledge in the English movie review. In this sense, Vermeer’s Skopostheorie can be applied in the study of English-Chinese movie review translation. According to the main idea of Skopostheorie, translation is regarded as a purposeful communicative action and the skopos of translation decides the strategies in a translation activity. English-Chinese movie review translation is also a purposeful communicative action. The translator can decide which strategy to adopt in order to realize the function of the translation in the process of English-Chinese movie review translation. Based on the previous related researches, the author of the thesis explores the effective strategies to deal with English-Chinese movie review translation in the framework of Skopostheorie. Firstly, a brief review on the history of Skopostheorie in functionalist translation studies is done and the three guiding principles proposed by Vermeer, the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule, are introduced. Next, the definition, functions and language characteristics of a movie review are presented to illustrate the skopos of English-Chinese movie review translation. And then, the author of the thesis discusses how to select appropriate strategies in accordance with the skopos of the translation with the examples from the Chinese and English versions of 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (8th Edition), a best seller published by the Central Compilation & Translation Press. Finally, the thesis reveals that English-Chinese movie review translation is a purposeful communicative action. The translator should follow the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule based on the skopos of the translation in the process of English-Chinese movie review translation. The possible translating methods to realize the skopos of the translation include word for word translation, annotation, free translation, amplification, preposing, division, postposing, combination and reorganzation and so on.
