Chinese traditional courtly portraiture, after lingering a brief downturn over the Yuan dynasty, shows a recovery trend during Ming dynasty. Inherited the Ming Court portraiture and its creative tradition, Ming courtly portraiture integrates various methods of Court style, either the literati paintings, or folk paintings, they all absorb excellent styles to show new characteristics of the times and artistic atmosphere.This essay which mainly studies on the artistic features of figure paintings in the Ming Court includes five parts. The first part defines the meaning of traditional Palace portraits and describes the development of Palace portraits; the second part analyzes the painting styles of courtly drawing and those of Western ones and their influence on Ming Palace portraits; the third part classifies the themes of Ming Palace portraits, which include portraits of Emperors, of Queens as well as paintings about entertainments, history stories, traditional themes and current themes; the fourth part mainly discusses the presenting style and form of Ming Palace portraits. Performance styles are the methods of realism and courtly display. The form of painting are made up of five drawings: freehand drawing, half work, half written descriptive; at last this paper briefly analyses the effects of Ming Court painting on later paintings. Ming Court painting style of expression and manifestation are the focus of the study, Ming dynasty painters kept innovating and improving the painting techniques by means of absorbing and combining the previous painting styles with theirs, what’s more, they paid more attention to details such as the presentation of personalities and inner feelings of the characters, as regard to painting techniques, they introduced the "inky vigorous" style into court portraits. Compared with previous court portraiture, Ming Court portraiture demonstrates a style of rigorous and somewhat impressionistic, more rough and tough, embodying the spirit of the characters in the paintings.
