The twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty,which is now collected in Nanjing Museum,is an outstanding work in the figure paintings of the Ming Dynasty.This set of portraits depicts twelve famous bureaucrats and officials in Wanli and Tianqi years of the Ming Dynasty.Their artistic style is vivid with both form and spirit.The blending of form and spirit has reached a new height.This set of portraits has made a breakthrough in the art of realism and deeply explored the spiritual essence of "people".While inheriting the traditional Chinese painting techniques,it selectively absorbed and integrated the western painting techniques,forming a unique new form,changing the pattern and conceptualization of the former figure painting and portrait painting,so that the practical value and artistic value of portrait painting are highly unified in practice,and its unique form of expression has also had a far-reaching impact on the portrait painting of later generations.The causes of the realistic style of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty are closely related to the background of the times at that time.The material foundation brought about by the rapid development of commodity economy stimulates the demand of the citizen class for portraits,and its aesthetic taste also affects the causes of the style of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty.The aesthetic characteristics of both form and spirit formed by it reflect the aesthetic trend of an era.This paper focuses on the analysis of the painting language of the twelve portraits of the Ming Dynasty,further explores its unique painting style characteristics,and through the comparison with the previous portrait painting style and the analysis of the impact on the later figure painting,so as to have a deeper understanding of the innovation and breakthrough in the modeling techniques and forms of expression of the twelve portraits of the Ming Dynasty.This paper will discuss the painting language of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty from five chapters.In the first chapter,the concept of portrait painting and its development in the Ming Dynasty are briefly described;The second chapter summarizes the main contents and values of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty,and analyzes the specific reasons for the formation of its painting style from three perspectives: the social background,the economic environment and the humanistic environment of the Ming Dynasty;The third chapter is the focus of this article.From the differences between the painting technique characteristics of the twelve portrait books of Ming Dynasty and the previous portrait painting styles,it will be roughly divided into four angles: picture layout,modeling method,picture coloring,and the combination of form and spirit,and then combined with the representative works in the specific portrait books to make an in-depth analysis of its painting language.The fourth chapter discusses the continuous influence of the innovative expression of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty on the creation of portrait paintings in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and modern times.I hope that through the research,it can provide some reference and reference for the future academic exploration in the field of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty,and make people realize its important significance in contemporary figure painting,so as to further understand and pay attention to the value of the twelve portraits of Ming Dynasty.
