Her novels depict the 20th century homeless Chinese people, especially women, then show the "lost" and "escape" of a generation in the war era, reflect the entire human condition. "Country," "home,’ "individual" is the motif throughout her work. These novels show us a special history of Chinese immigrants. In the beginning, Chinese American literature is bound to belong to ethnic minority literature. Western scholars regard her novel Two Women of China Mulberry and Peach as a important classic book for Asian diaspora literature, minority literature, female literature and comparative literature. These are described study Nieh Hualing works from the perspective of marginality has its own rationality and necessity. This paper aims to study the marginal characteristics of Nie Hualing’s novels and explore her marginal writing attitude. This paper analyzes and researches her novels from three aspects respectively. According to the autobiographical character of Nie Hualing work, the first chapter introduces the impact of her marginal life on mind and attitude, and analyzes characters’multiple marginality. These marginal people are political refugees, denationalization, exile citizenship, immigration and so on. They are eager to move toward the center, but also escape from the center. She has high hopes on characters, focus more on the edge of the group in the marginal groups. First, she tries to do a lot of identity of metaphor, so that these characters have symbolic significance, and set up a special identity for these characters. These characters innate or acquired with special mark:violate ethical, moral, legal and interflow. They also are the third world citizens, Chinese and ethnic minorities. So they are doomed to be multiple edges. Second, the female protagonists are semi-open women. They have both independent female consciousness, and influence of the feudal rites. This contradictory characteristic deepened their spiritual self-struggle. Third, the female marginal are explicit or implicit mental illness. Finally, these edges are outsiders, they will inevitably be excluded. This prompted the fringe person spirit variation, physical and mental trauma. The second chapter analyzes the marginality in her novels from the ideological, ethical, gender, geographical and cultural; explore her novels’pancratium and confrontation of the mainstream discourse in different categories. This chapter studies Nie Hualing’s marginalized writing attitude, her thinking on "people", "female", "free", and her questioning and reflection on moral, war, culture, nation and state. She always stands on the position of marginal discourse, examine the central discourse. His novels deconstruct the divine national concept, make the female discrete subjective feel illusoriness of national in exile and pursue, show a ultimate aesthetic goal that seeking freedom in a positive way after "removing the country, removing the nation, remove the identity". In the ideology aspect, the marginality mainly embodied in the alienation of mainstream narrative, politics, and the liberal faith. In this par, she expressed her thoughts on politics and the state system which is absurd and unpredictable. In the gender aspect, the marginality performance for the subversion of the patriarchal system, body politics consciousness, ues bodu play men, that eliminates the daughter, wife, mother of male discourse endows female. In the field of morality, Nie Hualing depicts taboo love of affairs and incest, the alienated mother-daughter relationships, modern people’s moral decline. Nie Hualing is interested in released figures from the frame of moral responsibility, thinking and resisting the traditional ethics. These characters of moral gray zone are complex, showing the good side. She believes that the standard of good and evil is fuzzy, the moral standards should be a gray area,, which reflects her pursuit of humanism. In terms of geographical location, Taiwan is experiencing domestic trouble and foreign invasion in the 1950’s which had very deep influence on Nie Hualing. It was here she set liberal ideals and stick to for life. The political turmoil in Taiwan, chaotic political situation is rooted in her heart, so she has a deep sense of wandering life, contributed to the sensitivity to the edge of her literary thought. In the aspect of culture, Nie Hualing has demonstrated the Chinese immigrants’survival plight in the sino-us culture collision, and expressed her understanding of Chinese culture and American culture. The third chapter studies on Nie Hualing turning point of literary creation after 80 years, namely from estrangement to return, In the previous stage pursuing cultural identity with the myth, in the last stage the idea of cosmopolitanism instead of nationalism. From constructing national cultural identity in two kinds of culture, has become a cosmopolitan that focus of the human condition, from defending the edge to encouraging cultural mixing. Although Nie Hualing adhere to the socialist ideal, but in her opinion, cosmopolitanism are inseparable from the concern of minority discourse, based on the edge, pay attention to universal human nature is always the theme of her constant. This paper is based on the marginality as the starting point to painting Nie Hualing’s creative life, namely from estrangement to return, from prodigal son’s elegy to cosmopolitanism. The article points out another understanding of the marginal discourse:it will exist for a long time, with abundant vitality it will continue to rise. Even in the international light society, the edge is still the most vulnerable and sensitive form of life.
