| Considering the western modern arts of 20 th century, Modigliani should be the representative of the ‘Paris school’ which does not belong to any genre. Based on continuous exploration on anti-traditional styles, he has created a new painting style which is not only derived from the traditional art, but also keeps up with the new age. Due to his internal melancholy personality and the complexity of temporal social ideological trend, the female figure of his works exhibits a deep melancholy motion; meanwhile, this melancholy beauty reflects the common aesthetic taste of the age. By analyzing his growth environment, life course and love experience, the study will identify the internal factors of forming the melancholy beauty. It is believed that there is connection between the context and its resulted art style. Therefore, this paper will based on the social context which is identified as the global art centre, the Paris, to start the research; then it will combine with the historical background to analyze the environmental factors of forming the melancholy beauty in Modigliani’s female figures. Modigliani’s charming painting style has many traits of classic Italian arts, which absorbs the primitive art of Africa and the modern taste; all the factors make impact on the formation the melancholy beauty. This paper focuses on the theoretical support of Modigliani’s painting and tries to find the pattern of manifestation by analyzing the line presentation, the unique modeling and choices of painting colors. By analyzing the melancholy beauty of Modigliani’s painting and combining it with the relevant philosophic and aesthetic thinking, this paper will present the theoretical significance of the melancholy beauty in Modigliani’s females painting. |
