Research On The Subtitle Translation Strategies From The Perspective Of Feminism

Feminism is also called Women Liberation, Equal Rights of Gender, which is a social theory and political movement founded to end gender exploitation, gender discrimination and promote the equality of gender stratification. In 1980 s, the Feminist Translation Theory came into being when Feminism was extended to the translation field. The Feminist Translation Theory claimed to reexamine the relationship between translation version and original works and advocated their same status in the translation process. The essence of the Feminist Translation Theory is to improve the status of women and eliminate gender discrimination by emphasizing the politicize of language.Subtitle translation refers to the simultaneous translation of film or television subtitles. Restricted by space and time, subtitles have the following four features: Firstly, the subtitle translation must appear with the pictures on TV or movies at the same time. Secondly, words and sentences of the subtitle should be brief and simple and express characters’ thoughts and feelings completely. Thirdly, the audiences have different classes, different educational background, and different ages. So words and sentences of the subtitle should be easily understood and suit both refined and popular tastes. Fourthly, subtitles have aesthetic value, so they should reserve its expressive style, aesthetics and verve as much as possible.From the feminist perspective, this thesis, based on the practical subtitle English translation of The Legend of ZhenHuan, performs a deep research on subtitle English translation strategies by means of application of different translation methods and techniques and deep analysis of the subtitle’s text characteristics. These translation strategies include Strategy of Female Consciousness, Female Strategy of Simplification and Female Strategy of Figures Characterization. Strategy of Female Consciousness refers to a translation strategy to highlight the feminist consciousness of characters. Female Strategy of Simplification refers to a translation strategy to make the translation more simplified in female perspective. Female Strategy of Figures Characterization refers to a translation strategy to highlight the different characteristics of characters in female perspective.This thesis has six parts. The first part describes the research background, purpose and signification. The second part gives the literature review of the Feminism and subtitle’s translation. The third part has a systematic interpretation of the theoretical framework. The fourth part systematically analyzes the features of subtitle text and the special requirements for the translation, and the characteristics of figures and languages in The Legend of ZhenHuan. The fifth part explored the strategies of subtitle’s translation in detail. The sixth part is the conclusion of this thesis.
