A Study Of Luo Jinan’s Translation Activities

With the development of the society, the research on translators has become an increasingly important subject in the whole study of translation. Luo Jinan (1898-1971), a famous literary translator in China, was good at English and Russian. He started to publish works in 1922. Due to various reasons, his translation activities didn’t catch too much attention. Therefore, it is very important to have a comprehensive, systematic and profound study of Luo Jinan’s translation activities.Luo Jinan’s translation practice helped to promote the spread of foreign literature in China and helped Chinese people to understand the outside world better. Luo Jinan had translated a lot of foreign masterpieces. Under the particular socio-cultural background, Luo Jinan not only had rich translation practice, but also had formed his own views on translation on the basis of the practice.This thesis will take the famous literary translator Luo Jinan as the research object. Luo Jinan was the first translator to translate Dickens’A Tale of Two Cities into China. By analyzing his translations of Dickens’novel A Tale of Two Cities and Galsworthy’s novel The Man of Property, this thesis will explore the influences of social and cultural factors on Luo Jinan’s translation practice and the translation methods used in his translations. The features and values of his translation practice and his views on translation will be summarized. This thesis also evaluates Luo Jinan’s translation practice and his views on translation, and makes him familiar to more people by certainly affirming his role as a translator in China. In addition, this thesis is going to point out the limitations existing in the research and put forward suggestions for further researches.Luo Jinan’s translation practice and his views on translation have made great contributions to enriching Chinese literary system, promoting the communication between Chinese and Western cultures and accelerating the development of translation theory in China. His views on translation are the precious treasure for younger generation.
