In the mainland,Ang Lee was called a Taiwan compatriot. In Taiwan,he was knowed as a mainlander. In America,he went by the name of an overseas Chinese. He has spent all his life struggling in the identity confusion. No matter what style of the original work is, Ang Lee will turn it into a story which is full of embarrassed contradictions. His films could be called the world of contradictions too. When dealing with the contradiction between the two sides, he can always avoid being partial to either side. In his film, there is neither absolute evil, nor absolute justice. In the narrative conversion, Ang Lee is good at using the Hollywood classic narrative technique, such as the transparent narrative style, the causal narrative mode, and the three-act structure. At the same time,he is adept at using the Chinese elements, such as the dual characters with double meanings and the Chinese classical images, both of them can add a mysterious oriental charm to his works. Although he is a strong supporter of both oriental culture and Western civilization, the oriental culture is closest to his love.Tell a stoly implicitil and politely, that is his own narrative style. In Both china and the west, there are only three kinds of adaptation theories,we can call them the faithful transplant, the creative adaptation and the neutral theory. But all these theories have their own drawbacks:Never really equal film and literature. The adaptation concept of Ang Lee is superior to them all, because of advocating the Doctrine of the Mean. Firstly,in Ang Lee’s films, there is neither absolute evil nor absolute justice.Secondly, Ang Lee will never take sides when dealing with the contradiction between the two sides.Thiedly,He gives consideration to both oriental culture and Western civilization.Last but not least, he gives equal treatment for both film and literature. All in all,Ang Lee’s films always follow the thought of balance control, providing us an example to deal with the relationship between film and literature.
