Books, as the carrier of the human culture and the scientific knowledge, have been playing a vital role in delivering the civil and information since it’s been created. On the other hand, books are considered as a very special product. The qualified cover design of the book, which is regarded as the key to portray the overall image of the book, has significant influence in guaranteeing the high quality of the books. Nowadays, the book market has faced great challenges from the appearance of new appearance and the swift of the taste of ordinary people; although many people believe that the future of paper books is in the dark side, it can also considered as the new opportunity for the upgrade of paper books, where the cover is a critical aspects that distinguishes paper books from the cold and inactive digital screen. That is also how the beauty of books comes up to play an essential role. In this article, how to improve the beauty of cover design that can get closer to the aesthetic value and meaning of the masses will be discussed. The design of the book’s cover consists of visual element, material technology as well as the structure modeling, where visual elements outline the overall image of the front cover, material technology reflect the connotation and disposition, and the structure modeling determines the architecture and genre. Based on these three features, this article will analyzed the aesthetic features from form, contents and concept’s perspective which are closely related with each other while focuses are various. Start with the beauty of form, which draws the attention from the readers through how it looks to promote the sales and enhance the brand image, followed by the beauty of content where the connection between reader and author can be well established through visual delivery. The designer is able to reflect the inner meaning and his/her own opinion via several methods such as association and symbolization, in order to offer strong interest, emotions and the convenience, causing the emotional resonance that could deepen the communication between books and readers. The beauty of concept illustrates the temperament and implication of the books. Implication condenses the ideas and emotions from the main body during creation, which offers a real sense of ’read’ to the readers. It helps to exchange the beauty of form and mental happiness so that a highest level of beauty can be built. The beauty of implication not only involves ethnicity, parsimony but also metaphorical; the product of cover can only be deeply understood under certain cultural background. A sound design does not clutter numerous elements but the most precise designing language; so do the nice design. Three effects are resulted from these aesthetic forms, which include compelling, fascination, and impression. With the change of people’s interests in the aesthetic appetite, the design of the cover may also have certain problems, such as churning out the content, copying from others without authorization, over-commercializing, form over the content and that the designer blindly pursue individuality etc. Facing various restrictions, the designers should balance between the business and art, which means that they should neither be led by the aesthetic appetite of the masses nor completely betray their interests. Our cover design ought to satisfy the diversified aesthetic aspiration, recalling people’s inner beauty, which requires more explorations by book designers and publishers.
