In recent years, Chinese Internet catchwords come into daily life frequently. As a burgeoning and special language, it has become a part of daily language, which display great osmosis and have a great influence on communication. They express ideas and emotions in various forms, complementing and enriching Chinese language. Translation is an important way to show foreigners the real meanings of Chinese Internet catchwords. However, some of the translations do not deliver the accurate meaning. Therefore, to make an analysis and study on the translation of Chinese Internet catchwords is of great significance to improve the accuracy of their translation.Sixty Chinese Internet catchwords from 2008 to 2013 are picked out from the editorial department of Excessive Wording and different versions of translation are collected on the Internet in this study. Based on Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, this study makes an analysis and research on the translations of Chinese Internet catchwords to find out problems in the translation of Chinese Internet catchwords, and to generalize guidance of Adaptation Theory on their translation. Firstly, the problems and limitations in the translation of Chinese Internet catchwords are analyzed in this thesis employing various examples. Through analysis, it is found that some problems and limitations exist in the translation of Chinese Internet catchwords, which are the neglect of cultural differences, the inaccurate expressions in the translation and the neglect of the characteristics of Chinese Internet Catchwords. Then, methods to achieve accurate translations are searched through continuous choice-making and adaptation. Finally, translation suggestions are put forward on the basis of Adaptation Theory. Considering the problems and limitations, suggestions of translation are put forward as follows:firstly, in the translation, the psychological world of the target language users should be followed; secondly, the rules and conventions of English world should be followed; thirdly, the physical world should be adapted to; and lastly, the characteristics of Chinese Internet Catchwords should be followed.The employment of Adaptation Theory in the translation of Chinese Internet catchwords is analyzed in this study. The study extends the research perspective of Adaptation Theory, so it possesses theoretical significance.
