Research Report On The Translation Of The Federal Food, Drug And Cosmetic Act

With the further development of economic globalization, international exchanges of various fields are being enhanced, and law culture exchange is one of them. In Chinese law system, food and drug laws have always been the weak links. Regarding many bad news about the food safety issues appearing in the newspaper frequently, studying and borrowing the merits of laws and regulations of developed countries has become a necessity. The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act translation project in which the author of this report engaged happens to be an example of this process. This report aims at discussing the effective ways to solve the translation problems of English legal text into Chinese through the study of the translation process of the federal act mentioned above.This report is composed of four chapters. The first two chapters are about the brief introduction to this translation project and the description of the whole process. And the third chapter is the highlight of the report, in which the author explains the methods to solve the difficulties of the translation mainly through ten cases. The author points out that it is of great importance to have a flexible command of the common translation skills, as well as to have a good knowledge of lexical features and syntactic structures of legal texts. The fourth chapter is the conclusion, in which the author sums up the Skopos theory and the practical methods the author relied on during the whole translation process. In addition, the author also talks about the necessary qualities of a qualified legal text translator as well as the deficiencies in her dealing with this translation project.This report is mainly based on descriptive and case analysis methods to probe into the translation process of The Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act for the purpose of providing useful references for legal text translators.
